Cars are undoubtedly one of the world’s most significant contributors to air pollution. Passenger vehicles produce substantial amounts of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and other microscopic particles that expose many people to risks of asthma, heart disease, birth defects, and eye irritation, among many others.

Looking at the big picture, it won’t just affect hundreds or thousands of individuals. It can significantly impact the world. Emission from cars increases the levels of harmful gases in the atmosphere. If it continues to spike — then Earth, as we know it, will face global warming.  

 

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) estimates on-road vehicles cause one-third of the smog-producing air pollution, and transportation produces 27% of greenhouse gas emissions. Long considered as the world’s biggest polluter until China claimed the spot, the US only has 30% of the world’s automobiles, but it unfortunately contributes about half of the air-polluting car emissions.  

 

 What Happens If We Don’t Stop Air Pollution?

  • If humans don’t do their role in helping decrease the air pollution, it will be impossible to breathe fresh air and cause many people to fall sick.  
  • There will be approximately 3.6 million premature deaths per year by 2050. Most of the deaths are predicted to be in India and China. 
  • Air pollution will destroy agriculture. The high concentrations of air pollutants will injure crops and reduce growth and yield.  
  • If humans take this lightly, it will even be the cause of death of animals. The contamination of soil or other polluted food and water will lead to their infection and ultimately, death.  
  • There will be droughts and floods. Aerosols have long been known to affect cloud and weather development. Car emissions are no different and will have severe implications.  

 

How Does Car Gasoline Contribute To Air Pollution?  

The gasoline used in cars, and automotive vehicles, is a poisonous and very flammable liquid. When the gas evaporates, or when it is burned, it produces vapors like particular matter, carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides that pollute the air.  

 

How Can You Reduce Emissions In Car Gasoline Engines?  

There are many different ways to commit to help and reduce air pollution. Here are some examples:

  • Install A Cleaner In The Gas Tank 

A clean exhaust is possible with a clean engine and a clean fuel. A high-quality cleaner will dissolve engine deposits, as well as clean the car’s injectors, carburetors, and intake valves. It will not only reduce the harmful emission, but it will also restore the car’s lost horsepower. 

 

  • Have A Three-Way Catalytic Converter 

Most cars are now fitted as standard with three-way catalytic converters. But still, it doesn’t hurt to check. Three-way catalytic converters reduce carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides (known precursors to acid rain and smog). Thus, they have the additional advantage of reducing air pollution. 

 

  • Use Particulate Filters In Exhaust Systems 

These are not just associated with diesel engines now. Some car owners have applications of wall flow filters to remove particulate matter from the exhaust via physical filtration using a honeycomb structure. It is recommended to “regenerate” the filtration components of the filter by burning the collected particulate matter regularly.  

 

  • Get Green Vehicles 

When getting a new car, try to have another consideration in the list. EPA has a Green Vehicle guide and gives knowledge about which vehicles are more efficient and less polluting. These include electric cars, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and cleaner burning gasoline vehicles.

 It is not a burden to help save the environment and do the role in reducing the car emission. Think of it this way. It is not only excellent for the environment, but it is also good for the car! It will show a better performance, and an increased fuel economy, which is not so bad, is it?
